Regina Roman in Nepal, 2014

My photography is rooted deeply in the stories I see around me; the shared humanity of a glance, the light that makes a mountain come alive, and the quiet contemplation of the everyday objects.

For many years I developed travel and study groups to Egypt, Ireland and New Mexico.  The foundation was always to integrate the historical, cultural and spiritual stories with the landscape.  For example, the vast Sinai Desert created a spirituality of silence, solitude and stillness in the third and fourth centuries CE through the desert mothers and fathers.  Likewise, the Celts in Ireland where forests reigned, gave status to each of the trees.  A spirituality of healing, enchantment and love of nature developed.

"Photographs are really experience captured, and the camera is the ideal arm of consciousness in its acquisitive mood." Susan Sontag

When I was not teaching or guiding the group, I tired to capture in images the story of the land and its people.  These images are a compilation over a span of 15 years using various cameras, some automatic, and often before using RAW files. However, a story is still there.  Now when I travel I use a Nikon 5500 or Fuijifilm x70.

In the section "stories" I have combined my love of both travel and photography. The skill and art in each discipline informs the other.

I am based in Washington DC, though I also travel regularly with my camera in hand. I accept commissions both here and abroad from clients ranging from international tour groups to individuals looking for a portrait with depth or an event with a story to tell.  Let me know if you would like to see a specific portfolio.
